The Gulf Standardization Organization's GSO 2055 series defines halal requirements across the GCC, but each member state implements it through its own national authority — and exporters hit the differences at the border.

Saudi Arabia: SFDA front and centre

Saudi Arabia enforces halal requirements through the SFDA. Product registration on the SFDA e-portal is required before shipment, and meat and poultry shipments need Islamic slaughter certificates countersigned by the origin country's authority. The SABER platform handles conformity certificates for consumer products.

UAE: MOIAT accreditation

The UAE's halal scheme runs through MOIAT accreditation of certification bodies. The UAE Halal National Mark is available for products certified under the scheme, and imported meat, poultry and products with animal-derived ingredients face mandatory certification checks.

What diverges in practice

• Recognition lists differ. A certifier recognised in one GCC state is not automatically recognised in the others, though the GSO framework pushes toward convergence.
• Arabic labelling is universal. Every GCC state requires Arabic labelling; halal logo rules follow national regulations built on GSO 193.
